Tüm dünyayı etkisi altına alan COVID-19 salgınının insan hakları alanında eşitsizlikleri daha da derinleştireceği görülürken, faaliyetlerini 180 ülkede sürdüren Londra merkezli British American Tobacco (BAT) dünya çapında çiftçiler, tedarikçiler ve çalışanlarının da dahil olduğu tüm paydaşları için destek, önlem ve eğitim girişimi başlattı.

COVID-19’a karşı destek

BAT’nin pandemi sürecinde yaptığı çalışmalar arasında potansiyel bir COVID-19 aşısı adayı geliştirmek, koruyucu ekipman ve dezenfektan üretmek ve dağıtmak, gerektiğinde tedarikçilere mali destek sağlamak, tedarik zinciri genelinde işçiler için COVID-19 güvenli işyerlerine erişim sağlama gibi ülkelerin ihtiyaçlarına göre değişen önlemler yer alıyor.

BAT’nin girişimi kapsamında çeşitli ülkelerde 90.000 doğrudan sözleşmeli çiftçiyi kapsayan geniş tedarik zincirinde insan haklarını teşvik etmek, desteklemek ve korumak için önlemler alındı. COVID-19 salgınına karşı koruyucu önlemlere erişimi olmayan çiftçiler için binlerce kişisel temizlik ürünü, dezenfektan, temizlik kitleri, yiyecek ve diğer temel ürünler dağıtıldı. Kenya gibi bazı ülkelerde ise yerel ortaklar ile çalışılarak temiz suya erişimi olmayan tütün çiftçileri için temiz su ve el yıkama tesisleri kuruldu.

Kadın çiftçilerin güçlenmesi için eğitim

Kadın tütün çiftçilerinin güçlenmesini de gündemine alan BAT’nin 2019 yılında gerçekleştirdiği “kadınları güçlendirme” temalı 298 eğitimi ile 24.368 kadın çiftçiye dokunuldu.

Sürdürülebilir tarım teknolojileri desteğiyle refah artışı

Dünyanın dezavantajlı bölgelerindeki tütün çiftçileriyle görüşmeler yapılarak sağlık ve refahlarını artırıcı önlemler belirlendi. Bu doğrultuda, Bangladeş, Brezilya ve Kenya’da 250 tütün çiftçisi ile görüşmeler yapıldı. Tarım teknolojileri konusunda verilen eğitimlerle ürün verimliliğinde artış yaşanması sağlandı. Brezilya’da son 10 yılda verilen destek ve eğitimlerle BAT çiftçilerinin hasatlarında yüzde 40’a kadar artış olduğu görüldü. İklim değişikliğinin etkilerinin en çok hissedileceği tarıma destek kapsamında sürdürülebilir kaynak kullanımı ve tarım teknikleri tütün çiftçilerine aktarıldı. Örneğin, Pakistan’da damla sulama teknolojisine geçiş yapması sağlanan çiftçilerin su kullanımını yüzde 40 oranında azalttığı görüldü.

BM İş Dünyası ve İnsan Hakları Rehber İlkeleri doğrultusunda yapılan insan hakları etki değerlendirmesi kapsamında Hindistan, Endonezya ve Mozambik’te 900’ün üzerinde ilgiliyle çalışmalar tamamlandı.

BAT çalışanlarına insan hakları taahhüdü

BAT, çalışanları arasında eşitliğe ve çeşitliliğe verdiği destek kapsamında, 2025 yılına kadar üst düzey yönetimde yer alan kadın çalışan oranını yüzde 40’a çıkarma hedefini açıkladı. Dünyada faaliyet gösterdiği tüm ülkelerde eşit işe eşit ücret politikasını takip eden BAT’de halihazırda aynı pozisyonda görev alan kadın ve erkek çalışanlara eşit ücret veriliyor. Dünyada ırkçılık ve eşitsizlikle mücadeleye destek olan şirket, bu kapsamda ABD’de bu alanda mücadele eden STK’lara 3 milyon dolar destek sağlamayı taahhüt ederken, İngiltere’de işyerinde eşitlik taahhüdü olarak bilinen İngiltere Eşitlik Taahhüdü’nü imzaladı.

BAT “COVID-19 güvenli işyerleri” kapsamında aldığı temizlik, dezenfeksiyon, eğitim ve uzaktan çalışma gibi önlemlerin yanı sıra online tıbbi danışma ve online ruh sağlığı desteği dahil olmak üzere çalışanlara sunulan kapsamlı sağlık desteğini de güçlendirdi.

Konuyla ilgili görüşlerine yer veren BAT Global CEO’su Jack Bowles, “COVID-19’un küresel etkileri artık insan haklarının çok daha fazla odağımıza almamız gereken bir konu olacağını gösteriyor. Çalışanlarımız, birlikte çalıştığımız insanlar ve içinde olduğumuz topluluklar için faaliyetlerimizde insan haklarına saygılı olmayı uzun vadeli taahhüdümüz olarak belirledik. Çevresel, Sosyal ve Yönetişim anlayışı ile yaptığımız her şeyde ‘Daha İyi Bir Gelecek’ inşa etme hedefimizi merkeze alıyoruz. Bu yolculuk kolay olmayacak, ancak üstüne gidilmesi zor konulara odaklanarak herkes için ‘Daha İyi Bir Gelecek’ vizyonumuzu gerçekleştirebiliriz” dedi.
